Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey Franchise Awarded
The Western Major Bantam Hurricanes are landing on the shores of southwestern Nova Scotia for their inaugural season in September of 2010. The newly formed Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League will be a 12-team, province-wide league for elite hockey players aged 13 and 14.
Developed and promoted by Hockey Nova Scotia, the league mandate is to foster the development of our province's elite players and provide them with an environment of strong development and competition. The league will be modelled after the existing Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, creating great hockey and educational opportunities for the players and exciting hockey for the fans. The demand for a Nova Scotia Major Bantam League in this province has been building and the Hurricanes plan to be a strong member of this new league.
Players will be drawn from the Hubbards, Chester, Lunenburg, Bridgewater, Liverpool, Shelburne, Barrington, Yarmouth and Clare regions with the intention of providing serious preparation for Prep School and Major Midget hockey followed by Junior “A”, Major Junior and College hockey opportunities and exposure for our young hockey players in southwestern Nova Scotia.
Franchise owner Larry Creaser and his executive are pleased to announce the hiring of Brad Muise as the Head Coach. Brad has coached three seasons at the Major Midget level with the Mustangs, worked with the Nova Scotia U15 team, was Head Coach of two championship Bantam AAA teams and is currently the Nova Scotia Scout for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau and Head Scout of the Yarmouth Mariners Junior “A” Hockey Club. Joining Mr. Muise on the coaching staff is Don Dodman as associate coach. Don has many years of experience coaching at the AAA levels in Bantam and is a power skating instructor and certified athletic trainer. Other staff additions will be announced at a later date.
The Western Hurricanes organization will be working hard at creating relationships with businesses throughout the South Shore and Southwest Nova for support of the program and these young hockey players. The team plans to schedule their home games in the communities of Chester, Bridgewater and Barrington. A Spring Identification Camp to be hosted in Liverpool is in the works for April and May.
